Poor Timetable, fixed and with more improvements to come

For years trying to make the trip from Tallinn via Valga to RÄ«ga and onwards towards Vilnius was deeply frustrating – passengers were stuck for at least three hours in Valga. But since the start of 2025 things have been changing. First the LTG Link Vilnius – RÄ«ga service was extended to Valga, with a guaranteed connection to the Valga – Tallinn service there, and then in 2026 an additional direct Riga – Tallinn service was added as well. OK, 2x a day is not amazing, but given that a couple of years ago nothing worked here, this is remarkable progress!

European Commission Analysis

In 2018 the European Commission published its “Comprehensive analysis of the existing cross-border rail transport connections and missing links on the internal EU borders”. The main report (74 pages, PDF) summarises the issues, and Annex 3 of the report (384 pages, PDF) analysed every single border.

For the sake of simplicity, I have made a PDF just of the relevant pages of Annex 3 that cover Tallinn-Valga-RÄ«ga – you can find that PDF here.
