Throughout the #CrossBorderRail finale there will be a series of events, meetings and tours. However unlike previous projects my network in the areas I am visiting is rather thin, so at the moment there are fewer events planned than in previous years.
Can you help? Am I passing where you live, and you have something interesting to show me? Or would you like to organise a small event? Let me know!
So far the events are as follows, and the signup form is at the bottom of the page.
Monday 9 & Tuesday 10 June, Gdańsk and/or Hel
When the Channel Tunnel opened in 1994, I remember reading in The Guardian about how you could take the train to Hel. So while I have been to Hell, I still have not been to Hel (in Poland). And on 9th June – if my train from southern Poland is on time – I might finally manage it. Departure will be on train SKM95471 at 18:33 from Gdańsk Główny, arriving Gdynia Główna at 19:07, departing 19:18 on R 90317 arriving Hel at 20:48. Return departs Hel at 21:17 on R 90422, and arrives Gdynia Główna at 22:50, then SKM59696 departs Gdynia Główna at 23:10 and arrives 23:45 Gdańsk Główny. Come along for a nice sunny evening train ride, and conversation on board! Signup: compulsory, using the signup form below
10 June I am speaking at Velocity Gdańsk 11:00-12:00 on a panel entitled “Pedals and Tracks: Overcoming Barriers to Seamless Rail Travel for Cyclists“ – you need a ticket for the event to be able to come to this panel though. Signup: you need a ticket for Velocity
Monday 16 June, Köln
More a follow up from my earlier #CrossChannelRail project, I am meeting activists at Bäckerei Kamps, Venloer Str. 25, 50672 Köln (near Köln West station) [map] at 08:30 on 16th June to discuss how plans for a future Köln – London train could be integrated into wider plans for rail investment in Nordrhein Westfalen. Signup: compulsory, using the signup form below
Tuesday 17 June, Stockholm
I have a whole day in Stockholm on 17th June, in between night trains (from Stockholm and onwards to Boden). There will be some sort of small event or discussion, likely covering railway ticketing more than cross border infrastructure. The exact details are currently being confirmed. Signup: please use the signup form below, once the details are finalised I will contact you
Friday 20 June (Oslo, 2 events) & Saturday 21 June (tour to Kongsvinger-Charlottenberg)
11:00-12:00 on 20th June there will be a formal presentation of my work at an event at Fridtjof Nansen Institute (Room: Spisestuen), Fridtjof Nansens vei 17A, 1366 Lysaker [map] – Signup: compulsory, using the signup form below
From 15:00 until at least 20:00 on 20th June there is an informal gathering organised by the Togferie activists in Oslo at Prindsen Hage, Chr. Krohgs gate 15, 0186 Oslo [map]. Signup: no need to signup, but if you do I can then let you know if we have to move indoors somewhere if it rains!
Saturday 21st a day trip to the Kongsvinger-Charlottenberg border in the morning – departing on train R 14 from Oslo S at 08:04, and taking bus 120 from Charlottenberg via Magnor to Charlottenberg and back, and then train R 14 back to Oslo, arriving at Oslo S at 13:56. I will have a folding bike with me, but versions of the trip both with and without bikes are available. Signup: compulsory, using the signup form below
Wednesday 3 July (note: amended date!), Landeck
There have long been the ideas to connect Austria to both Switzerland and Italy via the Reschenpass south of Landeck. At 08:00 on 3rd July I am meeting activists keen on establishing this rail connection, and if you would like to come to the meeting that would be possible. Signup: compulsory, using the signup form below
Saturday 5 July, Brugge
I am running a workshop at the ETCR event at the College of Europe in the morning of 5 July. Signup: to attend that you have to be a participant in the workshop
Tuesday 8 July, Budapest
There will be a breakfast meeting with rail activists, near Nyugati station in Budapest. Signup: please use the signup form below, once the details are finalised I will contact you
Wednesday 9 July, Kosiče
Cycle advocates in Kosiče are organising a small event for me at 19:30 at Cyklokuchyňa Košice, Čárskeho 7, 040 01 Košice, Slovakia [map]. Signup: please use the signup form below
Friday 18 July & Saturday 19 July, Chişinău and Moldova borders
Passenger rail transport in Moldova has largely disappeared in recent years, and I am going to gather some activists together in the evening of 18th July for an informal discussion about this. I am also going to be hiring a car to drive to some Moldova borders on 19 July – do let me know if you would like to join that trip, or could help with it. Signup: please use the signup form below, once the details are finalised I will contact you
Monday 21 July, București and tour to Giurgiu
The “fast” line from București to the Danube bridge to Ruse via Comana is now open again, but for reasons I do not understand the international trains still use the slower and longer route via Videle. So come along to investigate all of this. Departure is on train IR 461 at 10:11 from București Nord, going via Videle and arriving Giurgiu Nord at 12:42. Return is on train R 9708 departing Giurgiu at 13:45 and running via Comana and Progresu to arrive București Nord at 16:12. Signup: compulsory, using the signup form below
In the evening of Monday 21 July there will likely be a beer with friends and activists in București. Signup: please use the signup form below, once the details are finalised I will contact you
Sunday 3 August, Wien
Draisine, die Königin der Schiene! So sings FERD. But sadly I have had to cancel the Draisine ride, but there is a good final day of the project at the Austria-Hungary border. All mapped on umap here. Contact me if you want to come along!
